In a humid bioactive enclosure the water has to go somewhere below the roots, or the soil turns sour and the cleanup crew suffers for it. A drainage layer creates that reservoir. The usual candidates are expanded clay balls, lava rock, coarse gravel and plastic false bottoms, and they differ a lot in weight, cost per volume, how much water they hold and how they behave when you eventually break the enclosure down.

We weighed weight in large glass enclosures, volume for the money, resistance to breaking down over years and how easily each material rinses out and gets reused. Clay balls suit most tropical builds and stay light. Lava rock suits keepers who want more surface area and do not mind the extra mass. False bottoms suit tall enclosures where drained volume matters. A mesh barrier between layer and soil is not optional.
