A probe thermometer tells you what air and contact temperatures are doing over time, which is the half of the picture an infrared gun cannot give you. Placement decides the value of the reading, since a probe on the warm floor, a probe at the cool end and one at basking height tell three different stories. Probes vary in accuracy, cable length, sensor housing, whether they log minimum and maximum values, and whether humidity is included.

We weighed accuracy and drift over time, cable length long enough to reach without straining, readable displays and probes that survive constant humidity. Single probe units suit one simple setup, while dual probe or combined temperature and humidity units suit tropical builds where both numbers matter. Remember that thermostat probes and monitoring probes do different jobs, and an independent monitoring probe is what catches a thermostat quietly going wrong.

## Picks

### 1. Exo Terra Digital Thermometer with Probe, Celsius and Fahrenheit

Our score: 8.1/10 (Fit for the job 9/10 · Features and specs 7/10 · Build and materials 8/10 · Value 8/10)

Exo Terra's digital thermometer with a probe and Celsius or Fahrenheit display, a simple way to check warm spots.

Pros:
- Probe reaches into warm hides or under substrate for real readings
- Switches between Celsius and Fahrenheit for any care guide
- Compact Exo Terra unit mounts neatly on the tank front

Cons:
- Temperature only, so humidity needs a separate gauge
- Reads a single zone, so a second unit is needed for the cool side

### 2. Digital Reptile Thermometer and Humidity Gauge with Remote Probes for Terrarium, Tank, Cage, Incubator

Our score: 7.7/10 (Fit for the job 9/10 · Features and specs 7/10 · Build and materials 6/10 · Value 8/10)

A digital reptile thermometer and humidity gauge with remote probes for terrariums, tanks, cages and incubators.

Pros:
- Remote probes let you measure warm and cool zones from outside the tank
- Also useful for incubators when hatching reptile eggs
- Display can sit outside the enclosure, away from water and substrate

Cons:
- Probe cables need tidy routing through lids or vents
- Generic listing does not state accuracy or probe count clearly

### 3. Digital Reptile Thermometer for Tank, Temperature and Humidity Monitor with Probe, Terrarium Thermometer Hygrometer

Our score: 7.6/10 (Fit for the job 8/10 · Features and specs 7/10 · Build and materials 6/10 · Value 9/10)

A digital reptile tank thermometer and humidity monitor with a probe, for reading both temperature and humidity in terrariums.

Pros:
- Probe lets you read the basking or warm hide temperature accurately
- Combined humidity reading reduces the number of gauges on the glass
- Budget price makes it easy to buy one per enclosure

Cons:
- Humidity sensor sits on the unit, so it reads a different spot than the probe
- Monitor only, so it will not switch heat off like a thermostat
