Arboreal

Arboreal describes species that live mostly above ground in trees and shrubs in the wild, climbing between branches rather than moving across open ground. Crested geckos and many chameleon species are common arboreal pets, and their enclosure needs reflect that lifestyle directly, since height matters far more than floor footprint, and the enclosure needs to be filled with usable vertical space rather than just floor decor.

A suitable arboreal setup includes branches, vines, and cork bark arranged at different heights so the animal can move and bask at whatever level suits it, along with hides and resting spots well off the ground rather than only at floor level. Because heat and humidity naturally stratify by height in a tall enclosure, temperature and humidity should be checked near the perches the animal actually uses, not only at the enclosure floor.

A common mistake is buying a wide, short enclosure meant for a ground-dwelling species and expecting it to work for an arboreal one, which leaves the animal without enough climbing structure and can leave it stressed or reluctant to bask. Overcrowding branches so there is no open climbing path, or placing the basking bulb where it does not reach any of the upper perches, are other frequent setup errors with arboreal species.
