Quarantine

Quarantine means keeping a newly acquired reptile in its own separate enclosure, in a different room if possible, for a period of weeks before it has any contact with animals already in the household. The point is to give any illness or parasites the new animal might be carrying time to show up before it has a chance to spread to an established collection.

A quarantine setup does not need to be elaborate, but it does need its own full set of equipment, including its own hides, dishes, and tools, cleaned separately from anything used with other animals, since illness can spread on shared equipment even without direct contact between animals. Keepers typically handle quarantined animals last, after handling any established animals, or wash thoroughly between the two.

A common mistake is cutting quarantine short because a new animal looks and acts healthy within the first week or two, when many illnesses and internal parasites take longer than that to show visible symptoms. Skipping quarantine entirely for a new addition, especially one from a group housing setup at a pet store, is one of the more preventable ways an existing collection ends up exposed to illness.
