Feeding Schedules and Variety for Reptiles and Amphibians

Feeding frequency in reptiles and amphibians varies enormously, far more than new keepers expect. A growing insectivorous gecko may eat several times a week, an adult snake may eat once every week or two, and some adult species eat considerably less often than that. There is no general schedule that spans the hobby, so the first job is to find the frequency for your exact species and life stage from a reliable care sheet, then treat that as a starting point you adjust based on body condition. What follows are the principles that apply across species, not a substitute for that species specific number.
Age changes everything. Growing animals eat more often and need a higher proportion of protein and calcium than adults, because they are building tissue and bone. Adults of many species become considerably more prone to obesity, and continuing a juvenile feeding schedule into adulthood is one of the most common welfare problems in captive reptiles. Some species also shift diet as they mature: several popular omnivorous lizards eat mostly insects when young and a much larger proportion of plant matter as adults. Feeding an adult like a juvenile is a slow problem that only becomes visible once it is well established.
Variety is the principle that does the most work. Any single feeder insect has a particular nutritional profile, and a diet built on one item, however well supplemented, is narrower than it needs to be. Rotating among several feeder species gives a broader spread of nutrients and also provides behavioural variety, since different insects move differently and prompt different hunting responses. The same logic applies to herbivorous species, where a rotation of appropriate greens and vegetables beats a single staple. For species that eat whole prey, whole prey items are already nutritionally complete, so variety matters less and appropriate sizing matters more.
Portion size is easier to judge than it looks. For insectivores, a common approach is to offer what the animal will eat in a defined short window and then remove the remainder, since uneaten insects left loose can bother or even bite a sleeping animal. For species eating whole prey, prey width relative to the animal's body is the usual guide, and a prey item that leaves a visible lump but does not distort the body is generally appropriate. Feed in a dish or on a tile where possible rather than on loose substrate, which reduces incidental substrate ingestion.
Refusing food is common and is not automatically a problem. Many species reduce or stop feeding during shedding, during seasonal cooling periods, during breeding season, and after a move to a new home. A settled animal in good body condition that skips a meal or two is usually fine. What matters is the pattern over time rather than any single refusal, which is exactly why a written feeding log is so useful: it turns a vague impression into a fact you can act on. Weigh the animal regularly on a digital kitchen scale and record it.
Before concluding that a feeding problem is a health problem, check the environment, because the environment causes most of them. An animal that is too cool cannot digest properly and will often stop eating. Insufficient hides and constant disturbance produce stress driven refusal. An enclosure that is too dry may lead to a difficult shed and an associated appetite dip. Correct those first. If the animal is losing weight, refusing food for a prolonged period beyond what is normal for the species, regurgitating, or showing any other sign of illness, that is a veterinary matter and warrants an appointment with a reptile experienced veterinarian rather than further adjustment at home.
