UVB Explained Simply for Reptile and Amphibian Keepers

UVB is the part of the light spectrum that lets many reptiles produce vitamin D3 in their skin, which in turn allows them to use dietary calcium properly. Without it, a species that evolved under open sky cannot make that conversion, and calcium metabolism suffers over months rather than days. That slow timescale is what makes UVB confusing for new keepers: an animal can look completely fine for a long stretch on an inadequate setup, then decline. You cannot see UVB, you cannot feel it, and the animal will not tell you the bulb has faded. It has to be managed deliberately.

Not every species needs the same exposure. Diurnal basking species that sit in open sun in the wild, such as bearded dragons, need meaningful UVB provision. Crepuscular and nocturnal species were long assumed to need none, and while many are kept successfully without it, current keeping practice increasingly provides a low level option because there is evidence they use it when offered and it does no harm when a shaded retreat is available. Amphibians are generally more sensitive to strong light and are usually served by low output UVB at most. The species care sheet, not a general rule, decides this.

The practical unit that matters is the UV Index reached at the spot the animal actually sits, not the number printed on the bulb box. Keepers usually work with a system of zones: a species from open desert needs a higher basking zone index than a forest floor species. Two things determine what the animal receives: the bulb's output strength and the distance from bulb to basking surface. A strong bulb mounted too close can be excessive and a modest bulb mounted too far away can deliver almost nothing, so strength and distance must be chosen together. If you want certainty rather than estimation, a UV index meter is the tool that gives it.

Two installation details quietly ruin otherwise sensible setups. First, glass and most plastics block UVB almost completely, so a bulb outside a closed glass lid does nothing useful. Second, standard fine screen mesh cuts output substantially, often by roughly a third or more depending on the weave, so a bulb mounted above mesh must be positioned closer than the same bulb mounted inside. Linear T5 tube fixtures with reflectors are the usual choice for basking species because they cast a broad gradient of UV across part of the enclosure rather than one narrow hot point, which lets the animal choose its own exposure.

Bulbs age invisibly. UVB output falls long before the visible light dims, which means a bulb that still looks bright can be delivering very little. Manufacturers publish a service life, commonly around six to twelve months depending on the type, and the sensible routine is to write the installation date on the bulb with a marker and replace it on schedule regardless of how it looks. If you own a UV meter, measure instead of guessing. Replacing a bulb is cheap. The consequences of running an expired one for a year are not.

Finally, always pair UVB with shade and with a proper day and night cycle. The animal must be able to move out of the UV zone into full shade whenever it wants, which means hides, cork, and planting that block the beam. Run lights on a timer for a consistent photoperiod appropriate to the species and turn them off at night. Supplementation still matters alongside UVB, and the balance between the two depends on the species and diet. If you suspect a calcium or metabolic problem, such as tremors, jaw softness, or weakness, that is a veterinary matter and needs a reptile experienced vet rather than a change of bulb.
