Metabolic bone disease
A weakening of the skeleton caused by long-term calcium or vitamin D3 deficiency, most often from missing UVB or inconsistent dusting.
Metabolic bone disease, often shortened to MBD, is a broad term for skeletal problems that develop when a reptile does not get enough usable calcium over an extended period, most commonly because of missing or insufficient UVB exposure, inadequate calcium dusting, or an unbalanced diet. Because bone changes happen gradually, MBD is a long-term outcome of a setup problem rather than something caused by a single missed feeding.
Early signs can include a softening jaw, slight swelling in the limbs, or reluctance to move normally, though by the time visible symptoms appear the underlying deficiency has usually been present for weeks or months. Because these signs overlap with several other health issues, a reptile-experienced vet is the right resource for an actual diagnosis rather than assuming a set of symptoms is or is not MBD without an exam.
Prevention is far more practical than treatment, and it comes down to matching UVB strength and calcium dusting frequency to what the specific species actually needs, then checking UV output periodically rather than assuming a bulb still performs the way it did when new. Species kept without any UVB source at all need a D3-inclusive calcium supplement dusted consistently, since diet alone rarely closes the gap missing UVB creates.
